Mini Bio

Hello, my name is Derek. Welcome to my little space on the web! A Canadian living near Ottawa, I like to consider myself an artist. I shoot stuff... with a camera. I also draw and digitally design. I love travelling and always carry a camera.

Thanks for visiting! Please check out the blog and the gallery or visit me at Google Plus. If you have any comments or questions, I would love to hear from you.

Photography

As a photographer I don't limit myself to any one style, and while I'm happiest when shooting nature at sunset or the stars at night, I've recently discovered the fun but challenging world of studio, portrait and conceptual photography. Whatever the subject in front of the camera, I'm always trying to improve my skillset by learning new techniques and gaining experience in the field (sometimes a literal field).

My gearlist includes:

Pentax
  • Pentax K-5
  • Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5
  • Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6
  • Pentax DA 55mm-300mm
  • Sirui N-2204 carbon tripod with Sirui K-20x ball head.

Digital tools: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS5 and Photomatix.

Many of my photographs are on display in the gallery. If you're interested in buying prints, there are a selection in the gallery available for purchase through SmugMug - and please don't hesitate to send me an email () with any requests.

Art & Design

Artwork

In addition to photography, I have, now and then, enjoyed creating graphite pencil drawings, focusing mostly on realistic portraits. Although it can be difficult to find the time necessary for this kind of art, I hope to draw more in the future. A few examples can be found in my gallery.

Over the years I've designed many websites for myself and others, always aiming to create clean and clear pages. I do my own graphic design with programs such as Inkscape, GIMP, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Travel & Adventure

I love travelling - I've visited England, Austria, Iceland, Israel and many places in Canada and the USA. The Rocky Mountains and the West Coast are my favourite parts of Canada; indeed, one of the most exciting times of my life was volunteering with my sister at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (we were stationed in Whistler) - that was an action-filled two weeks!
